How Does Semen Testing Work?

A post-vasectomy sperm test is the critical final step to confirm your procedure’s success, and luckily, the process is simple. About 12 weeks (3 months) after your vasectomy, you’ll collect a semen sample at home, send your kit back to Fellow’s certified lab, and within a few days, you’ll get your results. That's it!

The Fellow kit is designed for accuracy, ease of use, and convenience. It eliminates the need for awkward in-office visits and lets you handle the process on your own schedule. Plus, if you need to retest, Fellow makes it simple by automatically sending another kit at no additional charge.

But what exactly is a post-vasectomy sperm test looking for? Here’s what a semen analysis typically measures:

  1. Volume: The total amount of semen in your sample.
  2. Count: The total number of sperm in your sample. Post-vasectomy, the goal is a sperm count of zero.
  3. Motility: How well any remaining sperm are moving. Because sperm shouldn't be present, motility is rarely tested for after a vasectomy. However, in some cases, assessing the motility of any remaining sperm can help determine if further action is needed.

By examining these factors, a semen analysis provides a comprehensive picture of sperm presence and health. After a vasectomy, the test focuses on confirming zero sperm count and ensuring there’s no risk of unintended pregnancy.
