Preserving Fertility Before a Vasectomy

Cryopreservation

If you're considering a vasectomy, you're probably sure that you don't want any (or any more) children. However, life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change. While vasectomy reversals can work, they’re not a guarantee. Fortunately, freezing your sperm before your procedure is a simple, safe, and cost-effective way to keep the door open—just in case.

At the Vasectomy Center of Connecticut in Glastonbury, our team is here to make the whole vasectomy process easy and stress-free. As a leader in no-scalpel vasectomies, Dr. Matson combines years of experience with a down-to-earth approach to patient care. During your initial consultation, he'll talk to you about your options and answer any questions you may have about cryopreservation, vasectomies, or anything else.

Cryopreservation

Fellow's At-Home Sperm Cryopreservation Procedure

What Is Cryopreservation & How Does it Work?

Cryopreservation is the process of freezing and storing sperm to preserve its viability for future use. Here’s how it works: before your vasectomy, a semen sample is collected and sent to a specialized facility where it’s carefully processed and frozen at extremely low temperatures. The freezing halts all biological activity, keeping the sperm in pristine condition for years to come.

At the Vasectomy Center of Connecticut, we make cryopreservation simple and accessible through our partnership with Fellow, one of the best sperm-freezing services. With Fellow, you can bank your sperm in just a few easy steps:

  1. Request a Kit: Fellow will send a sperm collection kit directly to your door, discreetly packaged for your convenience.
  2. Collect Your Sample: Follow the instructions in the kit to collect your semen sample at home.
  3. Mail Your Sample: Once you’ve collected your sample, follow the instructions to send your sample to Fellow's CLIA-certified and FDA-registered lab for processing.
  4. Secure Storage: At the lab, the sample is analyzed, frozen, and stored in a state-of-the-art facility. Your sperm is kept safe and ready for future use, whether that’s months, years, or even decades down the road.

Whether you’re planning for the unexpected or just like the idea of having a backup plan, cryopreservation through Fellow offers a simple, effective way to preserve your future. If you have questions about how cryopreservation works or if it’s the right choice for you, don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Matson during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cryopreservation process like?

The cryopreservation process involves collecting a semen sample, which is then sent to Fellow's lab for processing and freezing. Then, if you ever decide to use your sperm, Fellow makes it easy to access your sample. Just contact their team, and they’ll coordinate the transfer of your sample to your fertility specialist or clinic of choice.

Is it safe to send my sample through the mail?

Fellow's patent-pending kits are designed to keep your sample safe and in the best condition possible during shipping. Each kit comes with a preservation solution that extends the life of your sample and a gel pack that helps maintain the correct temperature during transit. Plus, overnight shipping is included, meaning your sample will arrive at the lab quickly and safely.

How much does cryopreservation cost?

The cost of cryopreservation varies, but in-person clinics typically have an upfront cost of about $1000, with an additional $300 for each year of storage. Fortunately, Fellow offers a more affordable option, with a one-time fee of only $199 and then just $140 per year for storage after that.

Will Fellow's lab test my sample before freezing?

Yes! Each of Fellow's cryopreservation kits includes a semen test, and once the lab has finished processing your sample, they’ll email you a detailed report of the results. These reports offer helpful insights about how your stored sample can be used in the future.
