Vasectomy Reversal 101: Surgery, Recovery & More

What is a Vasectomy Reversal?

The decision to reverse your vasectomy is personal and complicated, which is why our team keeps the process simple with our 3-step approach.

Consultation

During your first meeting with Dr. Matson, he will evaluate your unique situation and help you understand the success rates, potential risks, various factors that may impact your reversal, and some simple pre-op instructions. Keep in mind that this meeting is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions, discuss any concerns, and get the information you need to make an informed decision about your future fertility.

The Vasectomy Reversal Procedure

If you and Dr. Matson decide that a vasectomy reversal is the right option for you, the next step will be the procedure itself. Depending on your specific case, Dr. Matson will use one of two approaches:

  • Vasovasostomy (VV): This procedure surgically rejoins the ends of the vas deferens by removing the scars that had previously blocked sperm flow. A VV is always the intended approach, but in some cases, scar tissue may be present higher up in the vas deferens, making a VV unlikely to succeed.
  • Vasectomy Epididymal (VE): If scar tissue is present higher up in the vas deferens, Dr. Matson may need to perform a VE instead of a VV. During a VE, the vas deferens are connected directly to the epididymis, allowing sperm to bypass any blockages.

Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia and take several hours. Our team will give you a few post-op instructions before you go home, but most patients can go back to work after a week.

Semen Analysis

After your vasectomy reversal surgery, the next step is to confirm that everything is working as it should. Around 6 weeks after the procedure, we’ll recommend an at-home semen analysis to see if the connection has been successfully restored. Even after semen is present, we still recommend testing periodically.

The process is easy: you’ll collect a sample at home and send it to the lab for testing. Results usually come back within a few days. If sperm are present, you’ll be ready to start trying to conceive, but if they’re not showing up just yet, don’t worry—this can happen, and we’ll work with you to determine the next steps if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take?

After a vasectomy reversal, recovery can take a few weeks. Dr. Matson recommends at least one week off from work, then 2 to 3 weeks of light activity before resuming your normal routine.

Is vasectomy reversal my only option?

While vasectomy reversal is a common and effective method, it may not be suitable for everyone. In these cases, some men opt to explore sperm extraction, which allows sperm to be retrieved directly from the testicles, typically to be used in conjunction with IVF. Dr. Matson will evaluate your specific case and recommend the best course of action.

Additionally, some men choose to cryopreserve a sample before their vasectomy, ensuring they have a non-invasive backup option.

How much does a vasectomy reversal cost?

Vasectomy reversal is a long and complex surgery performed in the hospital that requires general anesthesia, making the procedure relatively expensive. To help with up-front costs, we offer financing options through CareCredit.
